Materials:

Step 1: Mark the Circular Wooden Sheet

Start with a circular wooden sheet and identify its center. Divide the full 360-degree circumference into 12 equal sections, with each section measuring 30 degrees. Along these marked lines, measure and mark ½ inch from the edge. These points will serve as the base for your festive Diwali decoration items. You can see them in the picture below.

A circular wooden board with visible grain patterns, perfect for Diwali DIY decor, is marked with intersecting lines and small dots around the edge, dividing it into sections. The board rests elegantly on a darker wooden surface.

Step 2: Drill Holes for Dowel Placement:

Drill holes at each of the 12 marked points along the circumference. Since the dowels are 7/16 inches in diameter, use a 3/8-inch drill bit to ensure a snug fit without the need for glue. This step is crucial for creating your festive Diwali decoration items, as it sets the foundation for a beautiful work of art.

Before deciding on the drill bit, we did some trial and error with various options we had to pick the most suitable one for the dowels.

Step 3: Cutting Dowels to Create Varying Heights:

Next, cut the dowels to various heights to create a visually dynamic arrangement. I started with shorter lengths of 6 inches and worked up to a maximum of 3 feet 3 inches. Each dowel was originally 4 feet long, so I carefully planned the cuts to make the most of each piece, ensuring a creative way to showcase your decor.

For example, one dowel could be divided into two pillars—one measuring 0.9 feet and the other 3.3 feet. Another example would be cutting a dowel to yield one pillar of 1 foot and another of 3 feet. This way, each dowel effectively served as two supports for the stand.

Here is how we cut the 4 feet long dowels:

  • Dowel 1 : 9 inches + 3feet 3 inches
  • Dowel 2: 1 feet + 3 feet
  • Dowel 3 : 1 feet 3 inches + 2 feet  9 inches
  • Dowel 4 : 1 feet 6 inches + 2 feet  6 inches
  • Dowel 5 : 1 feet 9 inches + 2 feet  3 inches
  • Dowel 6 : 2 feet + 6 inches + excess

You can use a miter saw or Miter shears to cut them.

A hand tool is skillfully cutting through a wooden dowel, perfect for creating Diwali DIY decor. The tool features an angle guide marked with various degree measurements for precise cuts, ensuring your festive decorations are crafted flawlessly.

Step 4: Spray Paint everything

I used gold spray paint to make them look like brass, which adds a touch of glamour to my festive decor. It always works like a charm! You can see the circular base, dowels, and some mini bowls I got from Dollar Tree, perfect for holding lights.

A set of long rods, round discs, and a large circular plate are spray painted in gold, arranged neatly on a silver tarp on the floor, ready to transform into elegant Diwali DIY decor.

Step 5: Assembling the Dowel Structure and Attaching Mini Bowls:

Now, carefully insert the dowels into the pre-drilled holes along the edge of the circular wooden sheet. Since the holes are slightly smaller than the dowel diameter, apply gentle pressure and use a hammer to ensure a secure fit. This tight fit eliminates the need for additional adhesives.

Amid the cozy ambiance, a person skillfully assembles a wooden stand on a dark wood floor, infusing it with Diwali charm. Using a hammer to secure each dowel, they work barefoot and with precision, their smartwatch gleaming as several dowels already grace the circular base in this DIY decor project.

Once all the dowels are firmly in place, use a hot glue gun to attach mini bowls or holders to the tops of each dowel. Finally, place battery-operated tea lights or floating tea lights inside the bowls to create a warm and charming display.

A decorative setup showcases a tall, tiered brass diya stand with lit oil lamps, perfect for Diwali DIY decor. It's surrounded by a circular arrangement of orange marigold flowers, set against a wooden lattice-patterned panel on a gray floor.

This festive item will enhance your home decor and add a sense of warmth to the entrance of your home, making it perfect for this time of the year. You can also incorporate fresh flowers or marigold garlands around the base to elevate the festive vibes.
