Step 1: Removing the closet door:
The first step is to remove the closet door with the help of a nail gun, which will open up the space and set the stage for a full closet makeover. Removing the door makes the closet more accessible and creates a more functional area for this DIY closet renovation.
Step 2: Removing the wire rack and filling the nail holes:
Begin by removing the wire rack, then use a screwdriver and cutting pliers to take out the shelf anchors, nuts, and screws.
After the racks are removed, you’ll see some holes in the closet. To fill them, apply Dry-Dap spackle with a putty knife and fill the holes. Allow it to dry, then sand away any excess spackle with sandpaper for a clean, smooth finish.
Step 3: Setting up the laser level and Applying the painter’s tape:
Place the laser level and tripod at the proper height to cast straight lines across the walls, which will help you apply painter’s tape in a straight line.
Step 4: Selecting and applying your colour scheme:
I picked the colors from my daughter’s favorite toys. I used color reader tool to get the exact paint color from different brands.
Step 5: Building and installing shelves for toy baskets:
Measure the space:
Measure the area where the shelves will be installed to ensure a proper fit for the toy basket storage. This step helps with the playroom makeover and maximizes your available space.
Add support for the shelf:
We used the 1×2 wood pieces to support the shelf on either side. We cut them to match the depth of the shelves.
Secure the wood pieces with screws and nails on either side of the wall to create the base for the shelves.
Apply peel-and-stick contact paper:
Since the paint didn’t provide the finish you wanted, we wrapped some scrap plywood pieces with peel-and-stick contact paper and placed them over a couple of 1x2s that are attached to the wall.
Attach the shelf:
Attach the plywood shelves wrapped in contact paper, to the frame, creating the shelf surfaces for your baskets and storage.
Step 6: Installing the wallpaper:
We decided to add peel-and-stick wallpaper to the slanted ceiling, making sure there were no air bubbles. This is an affordable, budget-friendly option for updating a playroom.
Step 7: Adding sticker tiles to the floor:
The boring floor needed a change, so I decided to give it a fresh new look. I also had some extra sticker tiles left over from another DIY project, so I repurposed them to cover the floor, giving it a refreshed appearance without the need for any additional materials. The tiles were easy to apply, and they added a fun, stylish touch to the space.
Step 8: Installing the feather pendant light:
We picked out a stunning feather pendant light for the playroom, but the wire was too long for the space, so we shortened it and installed the light. It truly created the vibe I was going for in this play zone.
Step 9: Personalize with fun touches:
My daughter picked out her favorite designs from Amazon to personalize the room. She had so much fun putting them up, making this a DIY closet project truly her own.
Step 10: Final organization:
We organized all of our daughter’s toys and puzzle pieces into pouches. The room is now a perfect play zone, with an easy spot to organize and store her toys.
