I actually used some extra trim pieces lying around in my garage after doing a picture frame molding. I completely changed the look of the TV for under $15!

Step by Step process of DIY TV frame

Step 1: Measuring the TV and Cutting the trim:

Measuring the TV:

The first thing is to measure your TV to create a custom frame that fits perfectly. You’ll want to make sure the trim covers the sides of the TV, including any black borders so that only the display shows when it’s mounted. Be sure to measure the width of your TV and the height of your TV carefully, taking into account the inside of the frame where the trim will sit.

Cutting the trim:

Once you’ve got your measurements, it’s time to cut the trim to size. Using a miter saw, make miter cuts at a 45-degree angle on the corners of the frame.

If you don’t have a miter saw, you can use a miter box or miter shears to make the cuts

A person is using a red and black Craftsman miter saw to cut a wooden board for a DIY TV frame. The sawdust bag is attached, with various wood pieces scattered in the background. The light-colored floor is covered with fine sawdust, adding to the creative workspace ambiance.

Step 2: Gluing the corners:

Now, apply wood glue to the corners of the trim where the side pieces meet the front piece to create the frame fit. Once the glue is applied, carefully press the pieces together, making sure they are aligned at the 45-degree angle of the miter cuts. Hold them in place for a moment to allow the glue to bond properly.

Step 3: Hanging Support

Once the frame is dry and the glue has set, the last step is to attach a support system that will allow you to hang the frame on top of the TV on the wall. You can use Brad Nails to add this support. Fill any gaps or nail holes with wood filler. Since it’s not visible I just used some scrap pieces.

In a dimly lit room, a person carefully adjusts a small block of wood on top of a flat, narrow surface. The blurred background reveals a decorative yellow vase and various items, while hints of their latest DIY TV frame project peek through.

Another easy way is to attach elastic straps across all the corners diagonally, to fix it on the tv.

Step 4: Apply Painter’s Tape and paint your frame:

Place the painter’s tape in the center of the trim. I’m creating a pattern with black paint on either side of the center, leaving the middle section for gold spray paint.

A person in plaid pants meticulously tapes the corner of a DIY TV frame on a grey floor.

Once the tape is positioned, it’s easy to spray the black paint on the sides of the frame, leaving a gap in the middle I’m using black spray paint to cover the outer areas, and once the paint is dry, I’ll remove the tape from the center. Then, I’ll apply the gold spray paint to the middle section to complete the design, by transforming this wood frame into a unique piece of art.

After the paint has dried, carefully remove the painter’s tape. Next, apply new tape around the edges of the black paint, ensuring that the gold spray paint stays confined to the center. There may be some slight leakage of paint at the edges, but this can be easily fixed with a small brush for touch-ups.

There will be some leakage some paint coming out through the painter’s tape, but then I can always fix it with a smaller brush.

A person meticulously spray-paints a DIY TV frame black, resting on newspaper scattered with crumpled brown paper. Hands skillfully maneuver the can while securing the long frame. Amongst the printed text and images on the paper, a colorful pizza ad peeks out.

Step 5: Hanging the Frame:

Attach command strips to the back of the frame and hang it on the TV. Adjust the frame to ensure it is centered and secure. Your TV is now framed, and when not in use, you can display artwork or images, turning it into a beautiful art frame in your living room.

A modern living room features a large flat-screen TV, enhanced by a stylish DIY TV frame, mounted above a white fireplace. On either side of the fireplace, tall decorative vases—one black and one white with a textured pattern—complement the minimalist decor and wooden floors.

Conclusion:

You can create your own version of your existing TV with lots of trim options available at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Would you try this? Let me know!
