What wood to use for wall art?

For this project I used some 2x2s lying around. If you are buying wood for wall art, there are a few things to consider.

First off, you’ll want to think about the look and feel you’re going for. If you want a natural vibe, opt for woods like pine or oak. These types of wood have beautiful grains and knots that can add character to your wall art.

For a more modern or sleek look, consider using woods like maple or birch. These woods have a smoother finish and can be easily painted or stained to match your decor.

No matter what type of wood you choose, make sure it’s properly treated and sealed to protect it from moisture and damage over time.

DIY Wood Wall Art : Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Cut the plywood base:

Take a scrap of 1/4-inch sheet of plywood to use as a base for arranging the wooden blocks. Cut the plywood to the desired size. Arrange some wood blocks without any glue and determine how wide the art frame should be. Don’t forget to leave an extra 1/2 inch to have accommodate uneven blocks and glue.

Step 2: Cut the Scrap wood:

The basic idea was to cut all scrap 2x2s into multiple wooden blocks of different heights. I kept my wooden blocks at 0.5,1,1.5 and 2 inches heights.

While cutting the wooden blocks, I used a stopper block on the right side of the miter saw so that I wouldn’t have to measure each time, ensuring the blocks were of the same length. So I cut a bunch of .5 inch blocks first and then cut a bunch of 1″ blocks and then moved on to next heights.

Now I have a handful of wooden blocks at different heights. For the art piece of this size it took about 220-240 blocks.

Step 3: Sand the DIY wooden blocks:

Since most of the wooden block won’t be visible, all I had to do was sand one side of the block. Even that would take a lot of time, so I decided to do it in a simple way. I clamped my orbital sander upside down so that it couldn’t move. Now I run the sander and I can easily hold the block and sand it.

Sand the rough edges until it becomes a smooth surface on one side since the other side is just going to be glued to the plywood.

These are all the pieces that I cut and sanded these are about 220-240 pieces in 4 different sizes 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 inches.

Step 4: Arrange the DIY wooden blocks:

I separated all the blocks based on their sizes and randomly arranged the wooden blocks on a 1/4-inch plywood sheet. Try to avoid having small gap and multiple blocks of the same size in one area. Do a dry fit to see how it would look.

Rearrange the blocks as you desire until you are happy with the pattern.

Step 5: Paint the DIY wooden blocks:

Grab the center blocks of the arrangement and paint them with Gold spray paint. Let it dry completely before putting them back.

Now, pick the outer layer, spray another color and put them back once dry. While spraying, make sure to cover all the sides of the block with paint.

Repeat the same process with the remaining colors: Brown, Almond, Copper, and White. I used Krylon spray paint for this easy project.

Step 6: Gluing the Wood:

The next step is gluing the wooden blocks onto the plywood. For my convenience, I clamped the edge of the plywood sheet with 2x4s and made a 90-degree joint to guide the straight lines.

Now start by gluing row by row without changing the original design by using the wood glue.

I also used another straight 2×4 piece to align the pieces in straight columns while gluing. Avoid any gaps and press them as tightly as possible. This will ensure they are properly glued to the other blocks.

Step 7: Hanging the DIY wooden wall art:

The final step is to hang the DIY wooden wall art. All you need is a hanging kit. Fix it on the back of the plywood using some screws. It is now ready to hang!
